Latif Maulan - An artist on a voyage of self discovery
By Gerry Long

Born in 1974 in the state of Pahang, Malaysia, in the quiet village of Lebu, Latif's early childhood was spent with his family in their bamboo house near a small river. Those early years invoked in him a great love of nature, particularly the Jungle and river where he spent so many happy hours with his family and friends.
It was with the help of two of his sisters that he initially commenced to draw, and not surprisingly his  first drawings reflected his love of the landscape that surrounded him.
He started Primary school in 1981 studying at Skolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Lebu and then continued his education at Skolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Bentong.  Although initially in the Science stream, his keen interest in art soon prompted him to transfer to the Art stream.
He finished high school in 1991, but due to financial constraints, had to forgo further studies at university level. Then followed a somewhat chaotic period…

(BM)

The exhibition ‘In Our Own Way 2016/ Dengan Cara Kita 2016’ is a collaborative effort by three private galleries and two art groups namely Artemis Art, Lua Gallery and Titik Merah together with the Malaysian Naive Art Group and W.O.W Kolektif. The chief intention for this showcase is to introduce art lovers to works by individuals without formal fine arts training who produced art for their own personal pleasure, inner necessity and as therapy. Inspired by the recognition bestowed upon the works of self taught and outsider artists, past and present from around the world in the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2013 which based its theme ‘ The Encyclopedic Palace ’ on the works of Marino Auriti (1891-1980) a self taught visionary artist, these local art promoters and groups of practitioners decided to come together for a series of exhibitions with the hopes to expand the definitions of art and to inculcate appreciation for a personal kind of artistry and creativity that is different from the mainstream. ‘In Our Own Way 2016/ Dengan Cara Kita 2016’ is a celebration of the uniqueness of the individual, their particularities and peculiarities expressed through art, in short, a tribute to each and everyone of us who choose to live and to express ourselves ‘In Our Own Way’.
