Latif Maulan - An artist on a voyage of self discovery
By Gerry Long

Born in 1974 in the state of Pahang, Malaysia, in the quiet village of Lebu, Latif's early childhood was spent with his family in their bamboo house near a small river. Those early years invoked in him a great love of nature, particularly the Jungle and river where he spent so many happy hours with his family and friends.
It was with the help of two of his sisters that he initially commenced to draw, and not surprisingly his  first drawings reflected his love of the landscape that surrounded him.
He started Primary school in 1981 studying at Skolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Lebu and then continued his education at Skolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Bentong.  Although initially in the Science stream, his keen interest in art soon prompted him to transfer to the Art stream.
He finished high school in 1991, but due to financial constraints, had to forgo further studies at university level. Then followed a somewhat chaotic period…

The Principle, Oil Painting On Canvas. Hyperrealism

Title : The Principle
Medium : Oil Painting On Canvas ( cat minyak atas kanvas )
Size: 66 cm x 122 cm
Year: 2016

17 years being a full time artist, the journey to this day,  face numerous challenges and obstacles to survive. Someone once asked, "Are you able to live to become a full time artist?" I stand by myself to pursue my career as a full time artist. Although I have no formal art education, I just believe that, if we are truly interested in what we do, surely we will succeed. Up to now I am still alive, able to eat and be happy with what I do. Art has been in my blood, like the free flow of the stream, its water is inseperable when swung at even with the sharpest of sabre. It is one of the required elements in my life just like the air that we breathe in.

“The Principle” This painting are more than a painting,  it is about the journey of my life, art are inseparable in my life, just like water that can not be separated from humans.  Life necessities.  I was trained to paint water drops at the beginning of my career. And until now i still do.  Water is a vital source of cultural meaning, which not only sustains our biological life but also our imagination and spirit. No culture or tradition known to us is indifferent to it. It is a symbol of purification, rebirth, and reconciliation, even as it is also a source of animosity and conflict. Water, with its close connection with fertility and life, figures deeply in religious and metaphysical worldviews of virtually all peoples

(From Principles of Water Etchics By: Bruce Jennings, Kathryn Kintzele, Paul Heltne )
"Water is dynamic, elusive, determined, and a fecund source for the human moral and spiritual imagination. We talk about water as a medium of disease transmission, as a fluid essential for biological functioning, and as a thing to be manipulated with wells, pumps, sluice gates, dams, and dikes. When we talk about the scientific and engineering aspects of water, we should not lose sight of the fact that water is also a vital source of cultural meaning, which not only sustains our biological life but also our imagination and spirit. No culture or tradition known to us is indifferent to it. It is a symbol of purification, rebirth, and reconciliation, even as it is also a source of animosity and conflict. Water, with its close connection with fertility and life, figures deeply in religious and metaphysical worldviews of virtually all peoples. There is a prototypically two sided aspect to the way water is represented and imagined in most traditions."
